My bilge pumps are not lasting at all. 2 seasons at best...
Tried all the major brands. Super confused???

The fist one we had on this boat lasted 16 years. Since replacing, don't hold up at all??

Anyone else have same issue???or a solution?

Sorry, lack-o-detail...

12 VDC electric bilge pump external swich.
Switch is not the problem...

Connected pump directly to 12 VDC and it does not run

Whoa! That's an expensive pump! I have the Jabsco Par-Max pumps, bilge and sump, and they run $250 each or so.

So, it just quits working? Does your boat leak a lot?

Can you remove it from the strainer basket and make sure nothing is caught in the impeller?

I assume you are using a centrifugal pump of some sort? Does it have an internal switch, or an external switch?

Are you sure the wiring is OK?

I used one of these on my mast boat…worked well:
Johnson - 32503 Cartridge Bilge Pump 500 GPH https://a.co/d/6XmYNpB

My current boat has one of these…going on 8 years under my ownership….not sure how long before that.
Mine is a Rule I think, but it looks like this style (built in switch).

MAXZONE Automatic Submersible Boat Bilge Water Pump 12v 1100gph Auto with Float Switch (Blue - Automatic) https://a.co/d/bOaANeq

The pump is toast, Wiring is A-OK and so is the switch. I connected the pump to a battery and nothing....
This is the 3rd pump in 5 years?

I pull the batteries in the winter so pump can't run / run dry...
Boat is covered and no water in bilge???

Sales dude at WM says he has noticed these not holding up as well as of late?

Tried a few brands, same thing.

Maybe they are freezing over winter but I pour a few gallons of Antifreze into the bilge....
OOPS maybe a problem??? Gonna check the chemical is the pink water tank
antifreeze,, Maybe....

Thank you all for your input..

There is quite a bit of info on-line indicating that the antifreeze can damage the bilge pump.
Who knew?? Go figure???

OK going with that theory as I have no other....

Thanks all

I put pink AF in my bilge too…no issues with my pump in 8 years or so.

Not sure about the AF theory. I have a Rule bilge pump and float switch installed in 2007 that’s still going strong, knock on wood. After seeing it frozen in an inch of ice the first winter (From condensation, not leaks. Boat is shrink wrapped.) I started putting AF in the bilge as well as placing a half dozen DampRid buckets around the cabin during winter storage. Batteries are always completely disconnected in winter. Sometimes it’s pink AF from the water system, sometimes green or purple from the engine, and sometimes an ugly mix of whatever‘s left in the bottom of each jug.

My backup bilge pump is Johnson, installed around 2010 or so and always sits above the AF because it’s higher in the bilge. It’s still holding up too, but is operated only when I check it a few times each season. My impression when I bought it was that Johnson might be better quality than Rule. Figured I’ld make it the primary whenever the older Rule pump expires. Anyway…

Manufacturer quality control issues and/or a streak of bad luck seem more likely to me, but if it’s happened across multiple pumps and multiple brands though, I don’t know…. Did all three pumps fail in the same way? You said it’s “toast“ but the wiring and switch are OK. Could the fuse on the bilge pump circuit be defective or oversized?

Edit: I always use Propylene Glycol anti-freeze. Never alcohol.

Pink antifreeze with alcohol or Propylene Glycol? PG is safer, but I’d be surprised if even the alcohol version would cause the pump to just stop but still look ok.
