We recently purchased a '94 Hunter 26' and while trying to pump out the bilge this afternoon the water seemed to pump out but then flowed back into the bilge wehn the pump was turned off. Does the pump have a back check valve? Do the line get clogged? There seems to be a lot of great answers posted on the forum. Thanks in advance for any help. Sincerely, Monte Brown

No check valve, just a raised loop under...

...the galley to prevent back flow when heeling. I cleaned out the bilges when I got my 94' h26 and the same thing occured (normal) as the pump can't clear the water above it. I removed the pump from its mount, let it suck then placed it in a bowl before turning off. A check valve would work close to the pump BUT might reduce the pumping ability to a degree depending on design. alan

Just something you have to live with

The bilge pump discharge hose has to have a high arch in it, to prevent taking ON water through it...and what's between the top of the arch and the pump is gonna run back down when the pump shuts off. That's why God invented hand pumps, sponges and buckets and gave man opposable thumbs so he could use 'em. :) 'Cuz if you want a dry bilge, you HAVE to use 'em. One more "fun" part of boat ownership...
