Dear Sir or Madam, I have a re-fit issue on my 1980 Hunter 30, and I would genuinely appreciate some help with. Could you kindly comment on the following. 1.) Bilge Pump Discharge Hose location. The stock bilge pump is a puny 350 GPM with a ½ inch outlet leading forward, turning to port under the head, and exiting the top of the freeboard through a plastic thru-hull. It doesn’t even keep up with the rain water. I need to install a more serious pump, and a larger discharge line. I was simply going to add it to the inventory (i.e. the other pump. However, I discovered that the clearances between the head and the bilge WILL NOT accommodate a larger line. Also, I have looked for alternative exits, but cannot find an accommodation. Can you kindly offer some guidance? Further, there is an existing cut off corrugated hose that passes into the bilge from somewhere forward under the floor. It is only visible through the look though near the head. It leaks just enough to rust out the mast step support, but not enough to actually drain into the bilge. Any idea what this hose is for? It does not lead into the sealed compartments in the V-berth, which also magically take on water, but cannot be drained. Jim Geraghty 203 545 8686

Bigger is Better

I replaced and upgraded the bilge pump on my previous 1980 H30. I installed a 1250 GPH Attwood pump in the aft end of the bilge compartment and used two float switches - one in the middle and one in the forward portions of the compartment. The pump took 3/4 inch corrugated hose that I ran up along the path of the original hose with no problem. I had to install a larger thru hull discharge. If you have problems threading the hose, try a smooth surface hose. I originally tried to use a West Marine 1000 GPH pump but it was not strong enough to pump water the 3-4' up to the thru hull discharge. The other corrugated hose that comes out from under the head compartment is the shower drain.

Stop the leaks

I don't know the C/H-30, I have a C/H-33. But I agree with John, bigger is better. I have a 1500gpm pump in the main bilge and a 500gpm pump in the shower bilge. My recommendation is start fixing the leaks. It takes time to track them down and fix them, but a little at a time and you'll get all, or most of them.
