Bilge Pump Installation

I am a little puzzled that this boat doesn't come equipped with a bilge pump. In forum searches planning for an installation, I have seen Chip Ford's installation with the discharge through the side of the hull, as well as some mention of the discharge teed into the sink drain.

I like the idea of teeing into the sink drain better than drilling a hole in the side of the boat. On the other hand, I think the best location for the pump and switch is under the cockpit deck, since that's going to be the low point when the boat sits in the water (I assume).

My question is, is it possible to run the discharge hose for the pump under the cabin deck to the under sink area? There appears that there might be a channel there, but who knows if there are struts or some other obstruction under the cabin deck? Thanks.

I have similar questions about my boat, an '86(13361). I had thought about putting the pump behind the volcano and routing it out to a fitting in the transom on the port side above and to the right of the ladder, but it would be nice not to have to drill a hole in the boat.

I'm sure someone will chime in soon with the information you seek.

pumps

My old style boat never had a pump, (still doesn't) never got more water in it than I couldn't get out with a rag. One of the biggest problems should you get water up front, it will stay up front there is no limber holes. I just made sure there were no leaks.

I took out the biggest leak problem on the boat, the keel lock down bolt. Everyone who's sailed the 22 has an opinion on the keel lock down bolt... I was knocked down once, the keel never moved. A friend suffered a knock down not long ago, keel never moved. (pic included)

The other is the bottom gudgeon but the water here will make it to the battery/batteries and that's as far as it will go. Fix those two you shouldn't have any problems.

Now the MK II I bought has a wing keel so a small bilge area, it came with a gusher hand pump installed, hose is routed through the transom low behind the ladder maybe 6" from the bottom of the transom. Oh PO lost the handle so................... :D

Thinking about it more, I suppose Catalina would have put a bilge pump in if a properly maintained boat could still get significant water in it.

I have heavily greased the keel lock down bolt as advised elsewhere in the forum--this is supposed to stop leaking there. Haven't had the thing in the water yet so have no opinion on the bolt. A knockdown must be a thrilling adventure!

I did notice yesterday while investigating possible bilge discharge hose routes that there is some evidence of minor leaking at the bottom gudgeon into the battery compartment. An easy fix there.

I re-sealed my upper shroud chain plates to stop that leaking in the cabin overhead. I have also confirmed that the anchor locker drain is clear and intact. I guess I'll call it good and see what happens. I have plenty of other things to fix. I just had this vision of getting a phone call from the marina that my boat's deck is awash at the dock..........

release

They same as us, just released the sheets boat righted itself. They were leading in the Region 3 Regatta, once they had the boat back up they continued and won that race.... LOL

Just so you know, I wouldn't advise trying to do that,:naughty: it's something you will never forget! But since it happened I've had much faith in the boat, and sailed it in some high winds and rough water. It will take much more than we will. If you do find yourself with the boat way over water will ship into the cockpit over the coaming. If your boat doesn't have the rear scuppers I would move that upgrade near the top of the list.

the call

Way back when I first got Last Penny she was in a slip at the local sailboat marina, the harbor master decided to have some fun, a boat that had been launched on the same same day (a powerboat) they wait until the harbor master is gone for the day the launch and tie up to the pier.:naughty: The guy in his haste forgot the drain plug, tied the boat to the pier then took off. It sank

So the harbor master calls me and tells me about the last boat to be launched yesterday had sank. Oh no what a sinking feeling, I had gotten to know him some but still didn't know of his humor. After he let it go for a few minutes and I had said nothing knowing I was the last to launch the day before, he finally came clean. Oh no he said it's not your boat. It's a stink-pot he says.......
