Bilge pump frequency..

How often do you have to run your bilge
pump?

Mine is manual and seems like I have to
run it every week now or it will cover my
batteries (my pump is on top of fuel tank so
we're only talking 6 in. ). But it seems like
I rarely had to run it before.

Or is that my imagination?

I can't give an answer on how often my bilge pump runs. I have an automatic switch.
But you can take a good look at the stuffing box- is there any water coming in? Put a piece of paper under the place where the shaft comes in. Other places- more worrysome, are through hull fittings.
If it rains a lot, water find its way into a boat.
Good luck,

I don't have any water coming in. Perhaps you have a bit of a leak
through a thru hull. Colin...

I was taught to adjust stuffing box to allow at least a dozen drips per
minute when operating - for lubrication. When it is adjusted as such,
it always drips, albeit less frequently, when engine is off. Hence,
even in dry weather, water accumulates in the bilge between trips. Trev

Hi;
you must have a different stuffing box. Mine is drippless, no water comes in. If it does, I just change the two seals and a bush, and for the next 4 to 5 years (depending how much I use the engine), no water comes through the stuffing box.

Like Wilhelm we have a Dripless Shaft Seal, which is a very nice
system. shaftseal.com When there is water in the bilge it is always
from another source, otherwise the bilge would be dusty.
