There are two brands that dominate the recreational boat market, Attwood and Rule.
Of the two, I have found that Rule pumps are more reliable and quieter.
There may be other brands that people use that I have not bought, so stand by for other recommendations.

I can't vouch for their recent offerings, especially since they now have a version with a lesser warranty, but I have a Rule 2000 that has been in the boat for 32 years. It works a lot because my air conditioner/dehumidifier is always on (no winter breaks) making bilge water. It is controlled by an old mercury bilge switch and the wiring has been redone to make sure that there is minimal voltage drop. Yes, I do carry a new spare one.
For a manual pump, a Whale diaphragm pump works very well..

My primary bilge pump is Rule, installed about 15 years ago. No problems to date. The secondary bilge pump is Johnson, installed 12-13 years ago. It’s higher in the bilge, never used, but I test it regularly.
Edit: Both are on float switches.

I agree that the older Rule pumps were great, but since the switches have been changed from the old mercury type, the Rules don't seem as reliable. I have had an Attwood for the past 8 years, and no problems.

Rule is the only one I have experience with, and I have 5 in 2 boats.

Rule is what I have on my boat but when replacement time rolls around I will definitely consider the new Whale Orca Auto 1300.

Our 1991 model boat came with Rule pumps, for the main bilge and two shower sumps. Both do their job to this day, so my vote to replace, if ever, remains Rule. Quiet, efficient, reliable, stable, well organized, systematic, structured, well planned, logical, coherent, well regulated, well run, well ordered, orderly, businesslike, systematized, streamlined, productive, effective, labor-saving, cost-effective, energy-efficient, energy-saving, and fuel-efficient. Whew! Nuff said.
