has anyone experienced significant water in the bilge section directly beneath the engine on a Catalina 320? Is it normal to have 4-6 inches of water in this small compartment? It needs to be pumped as there is no drain.

Bilge

No, I don't think that's normal. There should be drain in the forward part of the pan that allows water to flow to the bilge. Do you know where the water is coming from (A/C condensation, packing gland, etc.)?

Hull 702

I have hull 702 and have not exerienced the problem you mentioned. You might want to post a note on the 320 Owners Association as well. A lot of tech type ownners may have some good advice for you. John s/v Lady K

pan drain

I agree. I believe the water came from a leak on the sea water pump. I was surprised to see that much in the pan. If I had been underway there would have been water all over the cabin floor. There is no drain in that pan and I had to pump the water out and into the bilge.

Mine's Dry

Mine's always been dry and I can confirm that there is no drain. I've thought about it a couple of time while working in the area. I've always assumed that the tray below the engine was not drained on purpose as fuel and oil are also candidates for that try. With the tray non-drained it allows you to identify leaks early before they get severe (possibly) and also keeps a fuel or oil leak from getting pumped overboard. Bill

Leak

If your packing gland has a big leak it could be there...mine's dry...hull #442.

pan water

I have a 1994 320. Although there is no drain from the little pan directly under the engine, there is a good chance that that much water should have splashed into the bilge under the packing gland area. It should have drained towards the bow. Run a small fish tape, coat hanger or something from the bilge drain forward into the cabin bilge to clear any blockage. Check for water underneath the galley, as well as the port and starboard lockers where the battery and waste holding tank is located. On my model, water coming in from outside of the cabin bilge does not flow into it, but runs around either side. It's along story how I found this out and it may not apply to your boat.......still worth a look. Remove the front engine cover and run the engine to look for leaks. I agree that the water pump or a hose clamp may have come loose. Good luck.

There IS a drain on my 2002

The engine pan has a drain hose from the pan under the engine to the bilge. It's located in the front port corner of the pan (visible when the front engine cover is removed). This may be a later addition than either of the two previous posts, as Catalina seems to be continually improving the boats. The probable reason for the lack of a drain hole on this pan is to keep oil / diesel out of the bilge. However, the most likely thing to leak into this pan is water (as you discovered). Just remember: you are liable if you pump oil / diesel fuel from your bilge into the water, and the Coast Guard can (and does) get quite snippy about that. ($25,000 potential fine.)
