A tale of woe, abuse, and retribution: I fried two L-16 batteries from sheer neglect (OUCH!). They were in the starboard lazarette because they fit so perfectly. So perfectly, in fact, that I couldn't even get to the filler caps on the cells to check the electrolyte. Yes, I boiled the electrolyte almost completely out, and yes, after two weeks of fresh water, charging, snake oil and virgin sacrifice, they can not be brought back to life. The good news is that the new L-16's have found a home in the bilge (see photo). But this is a good news/bad news story: Good; 1)easy to check 2)lower center of gravity 3)more constant temperature... Bad: 1)Potential corrosion; Salt water + H2SO4 = chlorine gas; 3) other unforseen problems? They sit atop a 1/2" sheet of exterior plywood atop the keel bolts, so that the bilge will drain properly, and they are thru-bolted to the bulkhead in the bilge with 3/16 all-thread. The wiring to the switch is tinned awg#4 with liberal amounts of corrosion block. You could possibly fit 4x T-105's in the same space, fore and aft of the bulkhead, if your speed-log paddlewheel is not in the way. This is a work in progress. More later if problems arise from this set-up. I still have about 60 ft of AWG #4 if someone wants it.
