Bigger Wheel = Better Handling???

On my H28 the wheel that came with the boat is a 30” Edson Destroyer from Hunter. This wheel works fine, however I believe that it is too small. When at the helm, you pretty much have to be in the center of the boat. This doesn’t allow you to sit out on the lee side when sailing in traffic therefore not allowing you to see around the headsail. With this, any increased amount of weather helm is difficult to handle. Understanding this, I went on a quest to find a larger wheel. I found someone selling one on E-Bay, bid on it and won it. A 48” Edson Destroyer 7 spoke. I have not received it yet to see how well it will fit, or even if the hub will mate up to the steering system, but I am hoping that it will as I believe that most wheels have a similar center bore and key. My question for the forum is has anyone increased the size if their wheel size and what has it done for the handling characteristics of the boat?

I use a 40" on my 29.5

It allows me to sit on the high side pulpit seat and still hand steer. You have to zig zag a bit to get to the swim platform, but it's doable. 48" may be a little too big for your boat. Have you measured to see if you have over 24" from the center bore to the cockpit sole? My 40" wheel only has a few inches clearance.

Tuning & a tiller for better handling

Sails can be selected, and the rig and sails tuned to reduce weather helm. There are some good discussions in the archives on how to achieve this. I'd seriously consider this, because using too much rudder to counter weather helm slows you down, in addition to being tiring. A wheel gives you more leverage. If that's what you want, changing the size of the quadrant (if possible) might help more than changing the wheel size. Of course a bigger wheel is more leverage, and allows/forces different cockpit positions. If that is what you want, and you have already bought the wheel, you might as well wait until you get it, and see how/if it can be fitted in your set-up. There are lots of archived discussions on switching tiller/wheel, but I don't remember one on a bigger wheel - I hope you post excites a response! David Lady Lillie

I have a 41"...

I also have a 29.5...

with a 40" Edson Wheel, and, I've actually thought of going smaller. Having just traded up in Sept, maybe there is a learning curve involved. I really liked my 30 wheel on my old h27. Seemed to have a tighter response, but, it could just be me. I'll probably just keep the 40" and just get used to it...

Don't change the wheel

As you know the 30 inch wheel makes it hard to get to the swim platform. You need a custom crusing seat make for the removable seat. It makes a world of different, very comfortable too!

Wheel Size

We replaced our 36" with a 32" wheel on our Hunter 31 last year simply to give us a bit more space in the cockpit. We found no difference in rudder control and it easier for my 30" legs to reach the bottom of the wheel rim (my favored steering method). BTW my 36" is for sale if anyone is interested.

24" Wheel

I measured my wheel yesterday and realized that it is a 24” not a 30”. This is probably why I want a larger wheel because it is just so small. However in looking at the space that the 48” is going to take up, I may be looking for a 36” or 40” as it may be just too big. The 48” should be arriving this week and as soon as I get it I am going to try it on and post a picture of it and let the forum know the results.

28" wheel on my 1992

Downtime has a 28" wheel. I still can't steer the boat from the rail, but it feel like a good size. I can't take the wheel off and hang it from a Edson device that mounts to my bimini. I think a 24" wheel would feel small! You know what women say, "size does matter"! haha just kidding.

Recieved the 48" wheel...

UPS showed up with my new wheel on Monday. I took it down to the boat and guess what? The shaft that the wheel fits onto has a tapered center bore. My Edson pedestal has a straight bore. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this fit? Is there a conversion kit for this fitment or did I just buy an oversized paperweight? If so, anyone interested in a 48” Dished wheel? Cheap…

Moving around it...?

Moving around it would not be a problem. There is plenty of space on each side for me to get by. Plus, by being closer to the edge and further from the center I'd be closer to the action where I need to be. However, because the center bore is wrong, I am afraid that the wheel is going to have to go up for sale. I am asking $175 and I'll ship it to wherever within the US. It is a really good deal if someone else is looking for a bigger wheel and has a tapered center bore. Once I have sold it I am going to begin looking again for a new wheel with a straight hub. TMM

I wasn't aware that you could not put this kind of inform on the forum. Makes sense... And, if anyone is interested in the wheel is listed in the classifieds...
