On my H28 the wheel that came with the boat is a 30” Edson Destroyer from Hunter. This wheel works fine, however I believe that it is too small. When at the helm, you pretty much have to be in the center of the boat. This doesn’t allow you to sit out on the lee side when sailing in traffic therefore not allowing you to see around the headsail. With this, any increased amount of weather helm is difficult to handle. Understanding this, I went on a quest to find a larger wheel. I found someone selling one on E-Bay, bid on it and won it. A 48” Edson Destroyer 7 spoke. I have not received it yet to see how well it will fit, or even if the hub will mate up to the steering system, but I am hoping that it will as I believe that most wheels have a similar center bore and key. My question for the forum is has anyone increased the size if their wheel size and what has it done for the handling characteristics of the boat?
