BIG Lewmar Winches

We have been given a pair of BIG Lewmar 55, 3 speed winches in trade. They are fresh water winches off of a very competitive 1990ish racer. They appear to be in above average condition, fresh water and yes 3 speed.

We want to open them up and clean before selling, but a minor problem. We have tried multiple handles, but all that we have with square as well as handles with teeth, they appear to be too big. They do not fit. Is that possible or do I need a new pair of glasses.

Is it possible that back in the day Lewmar made a smaller gear handle?? Thanks

I believe that may be correct. On a boat I had many years ago, I had one large winch that had a handle with a square connector that was smaller than all other winch handles for the other winches on the boat.

We have a pair of 1981 Lewmar 65's and they use exactly the same winch handle as the other 20 odd Lewmar winches on the boat. Lewmar is a very approachable company. I'd contact them directly for an answer concerning your 55, 3 speed winches.
