Does anyone have any tips on aligning the Beta engine while the boat is in the water?
I have noticed that our Beta engine rocks back and forth whenever we're sailing and the
engine is in neutral with the prop freewheeling. This makes me think that the engine is
out of alignment. Also, the Volvo sterngland had to be replaced recently since it was
leaking and worn out after less than 50 hours of operation. In our installation (it was done
by the previous owner) there is a flexible shaft coupling which makes it quite difficult to
check the alignment with feeler gauges. Also, when disconnected from the engine, the
shaft and the flexible coupling has quite a bit of play in it, (i.e. the front end of the shaft
drops down towards the hull by about an inch or so when disconnected from the engine
coupling). When the boat was out of the water last I checked the cutless bearing which
does not have any play in it when yanking on the propeller.
Any ideas?
My only idea is to try to adjust the engine mounts while we're sailing until the vibration
stops.
