beta engine

I am looking to repower my Vega. Should I get a Beta? Are there other
solutions that I can put together. Or does anyone have a list of
common parts that the Beta kits include; such that I could buy all the
components off the shelf and put my own kit together.

Also, Is the beta engine available in the US at a reasonable cost?

Hi Lock

I have now supplied over 128 Betas to vega owners worldwide. Drop me an email off group (steve@...) and I can tell you all the details whether you buy it from me or not.

Cheers

Hi gang, can the rear seal on the MD6 be replaced without removing the engine? It looks like one could get ample access to it once the combi is removed? Is it a simple press fit? Hi Trevor

Take a look at
http://www.motoren.ath.cx/
These guys do a fantastic job of putting workshop manuals on line FOC!
Select Volvo/Penta from the list on the left hand side and on the
next screen select More Info - this will take you to another site
where you can download the MD6A Owners Manual and Workshop Manual -
hope these help.

Thanks David. I actually have both of those publications. Neither of
them, unfortunately, gives any instructions how to set the timing.
There is rumoured to be a separate MD6 workshop manual that is out of
print - I was hoping that it would be of assistance. Has anyone seen
this? Thanks again, Trev (V2915)

I know a lot of people put Beta engines in their Vega's if they are
repowering. The Yanmar also fits quite nicely. Both the 2GM and
the 2GM20. I put one recently in my vega. (a 2GMF) She does about 7
knots. The fit was quite nice. The only changes I had to make in
the mounting were two adapter plates made from angle iron, painted
with epoxy. For some reason there is misinformation out there about
the yanmar fit, some saying that the stringers have to be cut and
reglassed, and that there is not room in the engine compartment. I
had no such problems

Hi Trevor

If you cannot get the original instructions try looking at the
workshop manual for the Yanmar 2GM engine. This does give details of
how to set the timing. If the Volvo uses a similar method of adjusting
the fuel injection timing (shims under the injection pump) this may be
of help.

Cheers

Larry,
That's a very nice conversion. Your boat must have had a Volvo Diesel
in it before?

I have an older Yanmar 2GMF 13 hp (1983) conversion, but my boat
originally had an Albin gas (petrol) engine, so my beds look a little
different. I posted a picture on the Yahoo Photo Section under Vega
1331.

I agree, there is sufficient room for this engine, and it has served
several owners well for 25 years. The hour meter reads 5851 hours,
but I don't know if some were on the old engine or not ..... I'm
hoping !!

Hi Larry

I agree there are many options for fitting new diesels to the Vega. I have seen Beta10, Beta 14, Beta 16, Beta 20, Yanmar 1GM, 2GM, Wetserbeke, BUKHDV10, BMW 10HP, Volvo et al.... They will all fit with a greater or lesser amount of work.

There are three variants of bearers on Vegas.

Series I (Petrol Vega) - Bit of work needed on bearers and special adaptor plater needed.

Series II (Diesel vega) - No work needed, just bearer plate to be attached (Slight variant on some Vegas around V2000 has bearer plates not tehs ame height - Not a problem but means engine sits at 5 degree tilt athwartships).

Series III (Diesel vega) - Same as Series III

I trawled round all the engine manufacturers in the UK when I wanted to change my engine, the only company that really showed an interest was Beta and 128 Betas later fitted to Vegas proved it was a good choice in my opinion.

I am no mechanical engineer but I reckon to install a new Beta from start to finish including taking out teh old engine in 2 - 3 days. I know Ive now fitted a few but believe me "It aint rocket science!"

Hhhuuuuummm.....I too have a Yanmar 2GM in my Series 2 equiped with
the original (long) Yanmar engine mounts. In my installation they are
just too long to secure all 4 bolts on both sides into the embedded
steel in the engine bed - as a result the two most aft securing bolts
were just held in place by fibreglass!
I am about to replace the original mountings with Vetus which are
shorter (fore and aft)and will hopefully allow me to bolt them down
into the steel. Yanmar use two different rubber mounts for port and
s'board to absorb the engine torque so I don't know how well the Vetus
mounts will perform. Will let you know.

Thanks Dave. No shims in the Volvo, but I found some info in our site's
archives on setting the timing. I'm just hoping I can find the mark on
the flywheel this weekend when I return to the boat with a magnifying
glass. Trev

Hi Trevor,

If you Google for "Volvo penta MD6 workshop manual" you will find
several hits, including the danish Vega Club:
There is a (short) procedure on how to do it. The mark is not so easy
to find under layers of paint and rust, but it's made with a chisel
like tool, so you will know when you find it. If you "rock" the
valves on cylinder 1 (piston appox. in the top position) it will be
close to the top of the flyweel. The other mark is on the engine
block :)

Ulf

I don't know about the Vetus or Yanmar mounts. Mine are Globe
mounts, seem to work just fine, but Yanmar's official position is
that only the Yanmar mounts should be used.
