Recent tropical storm dumped a lot of rain with driving wind on our marina. We were told by the Marina Manager that we had fuel coming out our overflow on the stern. He went on board our 1986 Hunter 31 and found the cap to the fuel tank to be loose. He recommended that we drain the fuel tank before trying to start the engine. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to do this on this boat? Ideally we would like to drain from the bottom to get the water first. We do have a water separator on the fuel line. Prior attempts to drain through the fill line have been unsuccessful.

Use oil extractor

any of the ones commonly used to remove crankcase oil will work - everyone seems to have their personal favorite type. You'll have to remove the tank level indicator if you don't have a cleanout. Simply put the extractor tube to the bottom and keep removing liquid until you get to clean fuel or to be safe, remove everything from the tank.

Easiest Access

Easiest way to access tank is from inside lazerette, remove the fill hose from the tank, you have plenty of room to work and you can gain some head elevation below tank
