I am installing a SeaLand (Dometic) gravity head with an integrated tank - basically an oversized portapotty with a 9 gallon polyethylene holding tank - on my sailboat. Uses only 1 pint of fresh water per flush, and is very simple. It's this one:

My only question is what thru-hull fitting should I use for the tank vent (1-1/8" hose) and how should I seal it? The fittings supplied with the tank use some type of rubber gaskets as seals. I'm just not sure what fitting and/or gasket will be most reliable. Prior to installing the toilet, there's easy access and a large opening at the top of the tank, so getting inside is not a problem.

The existing vent fitting (0.5" inside diameter) is too small -- according to Peggy's book -- and I want plenty of ventilation to this thing, with little or no chance of clogging. I'm going to install the fitting as close to the centerline, at the top of the tank, as possible. May be overkill, but I really want to prevent problems. (Been there. Ugh.)

I've settled on a standard Perko plastic fitting for the above-the-waterline hull end since it can be replaced easily, but want something trouble free in the tank. Suggestions?

If you can reach inside, yes, a conventional mushroom-type through hull will work fine. Just add a neoprene or butyl rubber (not butyl caulk) gasket on the inside. No screens. 1-inch ID should be enough with such a short run and small tank.
