Best technique to lube control cables?

Hello everyone, what is your go to method to lube up control cables?

If they have a gland at the end with the control knob, keep that well lubed, otherwise don't add anything on the cable as the good ones are factory lubricated. I made the mistake of lubricating (used light grease) the one shown below and it became stiffer over the next few years until I had to replace it.

My cable is not like Ralph's.

I use some penetrating oil at top and it will drip out at the engine.

Maybe 10 drops is good each season.

It’s the shifter cable that is really stiff, last year, first time on the boat I sprained a bicep trying to shift

Morse actually made (makes?) a cable lube tool. I haven't used one in ages, and I couldn't find one to buy. However, a Morse dealer should have one and might loan it to you.

Check to see if the cable run is fair with no sharp bends or kinks.

Look at the cable alignment with the shift lever on the transmission. In neutral the cable should be at approximately a right angle to the lever on the transmission.

Remove the cable from the shift lever on the transmission, does the transmission shift easily by hand?

I will look into it tomorrow, just need to empty the lazarette to have access
