I am interested in purchasing a Catalina 16 and would like some advice on the best size of motor to put on it? best brand? and battery vs. gas motor.....thanks for the help....sn
for a 16 footer an outboard of between 2 1/2 to 4 hp should be plenty. don't waste your time on electric ones. I highly suggest a Yamaha. Great motors! We've got a Cat 22 and use a Yamaha 8 hp and it will push our boat right along. So, good luck and happy sailing.
I agree with Roger....Forget about the electric motor. The batteries getawful heavy and it's pretty hard to tell how much life they have in them.I own a Yamaha also and so far have had great luck with it. The size you need depends on the kind of boating you plan to do. I would get a four stroke no matter what.-Tim Pinkham
Well I'm sure Yamaha's are a good product as well, but I have a 15 year old honda 7.5 hp 4 stroke that is just as tight and sound today as when I put it on my first 22' sailboat. So if I were to reccomend a ob motor it would have to be a Honda. For a 16' boat I would think a 3hp should be plenty large enough. Be sure and get a 4 stroke though, they might be a bit more cost wise but in the long run they are the cheapest and more rugged of the two, to maintain.Happy sailing Dave LaPere
I'd have to agree with Dave on the Honda. As Dave suggested, I'd opt for the 4-cycle. On Lake Tahoe, for example, 2-cycles have been banned from the Lake. Sail boat auxilliary motors must be 4-cycle or EPA approved 2-cycles as of 10/1/01. This will no doubt "ripple" to other areas in time.
