My 18' sailboat is currently in a slip in Marina del Rey. I can't stand the Westside traffic anymore so I would like to move her to a slip in Long Beach, Wilmington, or San Pedro.

I would appreciate comments from those who have knowledge of the marinas there. And I would like information about other discussion boards on the web that particularly deal with southern California boating.

TIA

Alamitos Bay Marina in Long Beach is awesome, as is the Long Beach City Marina. I would go with Alamitos though because it is in Seal Beach which is such a cute, quaint, little town with a beautiful beach, lots of good places to eat, a nice pier and boardwalk. Check it out.

(yes......I live in Maryland, but I lived in California, including Long Beach, for 16 years. My daughter lives in Seal Beach. We love it.)

We moved into San Pedro, and really love it there. The Port of Los Angeles has really dumped a lot of money bringing up the local area. It is a little less money than Long Beach, and the best part is there are no special events that block in the area once or twice a month. Next month it will be the Grand Prix. Makes getting into the marina area a pain.

I keep my boat at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, and I can't say enough good things about them and the marina manager Dean Wyer. San Pedro is MUCH better than MDR.

You even get to hear duels horns playing taps every night at 9 pm form the Fort above them. I've had zero issues like theft, weirdos etc. all in all a 10.

If you don't like noise & traffic (and who does?); you probably won't like the Long Beach Shoreline (Downtown) Marina, if there are even slips available in your size range, which I doubt. But, there is a lot to do and see there; many places to eat and drink, and socialize; and the docks are new and clean. The docks at Alamitos are old and decrepit; but the marina is much quieter and neighborhood like. It's large; so Main Street of Seal Beach is a mile to perhaps two miles from where the small boats have slips. Also, it's a long ride out the channel there for sailing compared to Shoreline. The San Pedro marinas are all very nice, and it's pretty and quiet there. Maybe too quiet if you're a single guy "in town for the weekend", etc. The wind blows through in the high teens most summer afternoons; so it's good sailing out in the harbor if you're up for it. The Wilmington marinas and slips "are all over the map"; some nice and some not. The one thing in common is that they are all far (e.g. 20-30 min putt or sail) to the harbor and out the gate to sea. Also, you face the same winds as in the San Pedro marinas.

Thanks so much for all your input. I used to crew on a boat that was slipped in Wilmington. It was cheaper but as has been said, it's a long haul up the channel to the harbor and one dodges container ships on the way. So, now that I have some information I'll start looking. Any further comments are most welcome.
