I'm not a fan of 5200. I'm replacing a depth/speed transducer and through hull what do you folks recommend

Airmar said to use 5200 below water and that is what I used when changing
my new thru hull over 2 years ago and that is what Hunter used and so far no problems.

I replaced the through hull on my San Juan 20+ years ago and used 4200. It is fine. Just make sure the bedding compound you use is rated for below the waterline.

I used the Sikaflex 291 marine sealant as recommended by Maine Sail ....

I haven't got the boat back in the water yet but I have complete confidence in his recommendation.

I also have quite a few pictures and such on putting in new thru-hulls here...

Either 4200 or 5200 will do fine. I use both as needed. 5200 is an adhesive. DESIGNED to STICK. Many dislike it because they use it where a CAULK is needed, NOT an adhesive.

You never want to use 3M 5200 for a thru-hull because it is an adhesive caulk and very difficult or impossible to take apart and a thru-hull might have to be removed. 5200 is fine under the water for keels, etc. But not thru-hulls. I like polysulfide caulks like Boat Life's Life Calk. It is designed for underwater use, remains somewhat elastic and adheres to different types of materials. It was originally developed by Thiokol as a two part caulk, but Life Calk is one part and can be purchased in tubes or cartridges. It has been out a long, long time and I have been using it since the 1970's. You can even caulk up your thru-hull and launch your boat as it cures faster under water (with the absence of oxygen). Great stuff. Don't use silicone either.

I use 5200 below water on anything even my thru hulls and yes it like cement
very hard to remove but works great for thru hulls and I want to know my thru hulls
are not going to come loose or leak, how often do you need to change thru hulls any way.
I replaced my thru hull with 2 new ones about 2 years ago and yes they were a bitch to
take apart because 5200 does a good job for sure.
Hey use what you want but my boat uses 5200 below water and so does Hunter for sure and I sleep real good on or off my H-36.
