My daughter wants to make aCD for me for my 51st birthday so I can play it on the sailboat. QUESTION: What are some of the best current sailing music / songs? ie: Southern Cross by Crosbey, Still and Nash or Sailing by Chris Cross Thanks Richard

Black Water

Well, it's probably just me, and it's not really exactly a sailing song, but since I just bought a boat near New Orleans, I've already told my wife that "Black Water" has to be played as the first song on the stereo, as soon as it's installed. Will probably be a regular.

Sailing music

Greetings Richard, The best selection of sailing music is available from migrationmusic.com, it is an internet radio feed and they sell everything they play. You can't go wrong with Eric Stone, Jack Mosley, Jim Morris, James "Sunny Jim" White, Dave Lapio, Hugo Duarte and Brent Burns. Migration music also has a "various artists" cd called "Songs for Sail". Best of luck and happy 51st birthday!

Anything on the 'Boats' CD...

from Jimmy Buffett's 'Boats, Beaches, Bars and Ballads' boxed set. I like to add the 'Theme from Gilligan's Island' to the beginning. Just for leaving the dock with visitors aboard ;)

All at Sea

I never go sailing without Michael McCloud. As for single songs, Jamie Cullom's "All at Sea" is a new one I've even seen on VH1.

Tough one

I have been trying to put a CD together as well and it's tough finding good tracks to add that aren't shanties. Really any Buffett or Bob Marley or Eric Stone will work. Also: Down by the Waterline by Dire Straits If I Had a Boat - Lyle Lovett (covered by Buffett and Dave Matthews - great versions)

Eileen Quinn

Happy Birthday! I don't usually listen to music when sailing... the sound of the wind and water rushing under the hull is music to my ears! When away from the boat and nautically inclined, I like Jimmy Buffet and Eileen Quinn. http://www.eileenquinn.com/ Fair winds, Tom

Wind in the Rigging

If you like instrumentals, a CD titled "The Wind in the Rigging" is a must. It is a selection of 18th and 19th century tunes performed on instruments from the time period. Great stuff. Here is a link to it: http://www.otisread.com/cds/rigging.html I agree whole heartedly with some of the other suggestions: "If I had a Boat" (I like Tony Furtado's arrangement); Traditional Irish music, and a great bluegrass classic, "Drifting with the Tide" Happy B'Day Alan

no J Buffett Please

I can't take any more J Buffett. He is really not very good! I did like Eileen Quinn! I just may buy one of her CDs! How about this classic, "Looking Glass - Brandy, you're a fine girl"

Vaughn is the answer

If you like a rocking sound with great guitar licks, I suggest Stevie Ray Vaughn. I am 50. The other suggestions are good too.

Perfect Storm Soundtrack

We like to start our cruises to Catalina with the soundtrack. It gets the blood flowing.

Wind in the Rigging Revised

I just re-read the original question seeking suggestions for "current era." My suggestion doesn't fit that, sorry. For those who like traditional music, it's still a keeper. Alan

How about Rap??

How about rap artists like Snoop Dog, Run DMC, Eminem and Puff Daddy? Turn the treble down low and the bass real high. Then jack up the volume to max. The vibrations through the hull will propel the boat without even putting up the sails! Randy

Randy K,

Didn't you leave the "C" off of the word "rap"? And isn't the phrase "rap artist" a contradiction of terms?

Pirates!

I'm a parrothead so I will forgive you anti-JB guys (probably something from the British Admiralty). Now that said, one of the best things I found to sail to is the soundtrack to "Pirates of the Carribbean". One day while sailing the wind was almost at command to the music-building up, and calming down. It was assume. Before you hang me, just try it one time! Fins up, Rum down, and sailin' out of town
