Hi- I am researching the best route from BVI to Palmas del Mar. Would be leaving Penns Landing in Tortola, passing north of St John, and between St John and St Thomas. Am concerned about passing through St James Bay- can one pass through this on a sail boat ? or would I need to go all the way south.

Also would be trying to make it to Culebra that day - but if not what good anchorages in St Thomas are suggested ?
Thank you.

St James Bay is "sailable." The ferries go through there. Many anchorages on the S side of St Thomas.

Do you not have a VI cruising guide on board?

There's always Google Earth.

So many anchorages to choose from in the USVI; Francis Bay, St John, Christmas Cove just after the cut and Honeymoon on Water Island, just to name 3 spectacular ones.
I second the cruising guide suggestion; they make traveling so much easier and fun.

Yes I went over the cruising guide, it just seemed narrow on the chart.
Would you know how long it would take from there to Culebra? We want to
Make sure to arrive w daylight as it looks as the approach can be tricky.

Water Island:

How about Water Island in St. Thomas ? Has anybody had experience with anchorage in this island ?

Honeymoon, on the west end of Water Island, is one of the nicest anchorages in the Caribbean. It can be busy in the day time w/tour boats, but settles down by 4pm. Reasonable holding, sand on coral. North side of Water Island there is a huge anchorage, but it's across from the commercial harbor, so it's busy. Good holding, but you must not anchor where you will interfere w/ the comings and goings of the cruise ships.
If I remember right (I don't have a chart handy), Culebra is about 16 miles from there. If I was messing about in the Spanish Virgins, I would anchor in the Cordeliera, a chain of small islands between St.T and PR. Multiple anchorages, clean, clear and usually solitary.

Thank you. Found honeymoon bay on the chart. Will search for the other islands.
