I just purshase a 1987 Catalina 27 Tall Rig with the orginal sails. I want to upgrade the sails, for racing. I'm thinking about full batten and large roach for the main and a 150 headsail. Does anyone have a different suggestion?

racing sails....

...what's your budget? Are you roller furling one sail? My first suggestion is to call a local sail loft that makes racing sails for sailors in your area.Tell them what's on your mind and let them suggest options, then ask them to give you some estimates. be ready...$$$$.. laminated racing sails cost more than dacron. You might not need a 150 with the large roach main. Spend the extra bucks on a rigid boom vang and an adjustable jib car system. Those are things that will pay off, big time. Then I'd call the local yacht clubs for membership information, cause you'll need to be affiliated with one of them to race phrf. Ask which boats participate in your class and see if you can contact the owners, then ask them what theyre using, also any restrictions or handicap adjustments for different size sails. Class racing (C30 only) is very restrictive whereas phrf is adjustment oriented. You might consider joining a catalina 30 fleet if there's one within reasonable distance. Sailors who participate in fleet activities more than likely race their boats so you'll get some good advice regarding setting up your boat for racing.
