Best Portable Toilet for H22

Any recommendations for a good portable toilet for a H22? I saw a Sanipottie at a RV store which I think was original equipment on this boat but it looked so frail I'd hesitate to sit on it. Also read a review on them at West Marine and most said there were many design flaws. I hope someone here can recommend a good quality portable and if I should consider one that can also be pumped out. Thanks, Pete

Best toilet

With my first boat I had a porta pottie but when I got my Hunter 22 it had a mounted marine toilet but no holding tank. I capped the valves and disconnected the hoses. I hated the porta pottie because we might go once or twice a week to the lake and then I had to either dump it every time or wait several weeks. Gary in our Sailboat club told me about the West Marine Wag Bags. It's a bag with chrystals that we put in the toilet and can be used 3 to 4 times. It has it's own zip lock bag, which I put in th bottom of the Toilet first. When you are done you throw it away in a regular garbage can with the trash just like a diaper. No dumping and cleaning and carrying the holding tank and carrying water to flush.

SeaLand Sanipottie is top quality

I haven't seen WM's "review" of it, so I dunno what they consider design flaws, but it's always been the best out there. I suggest you go with the larger 965-MSD 5-6 gal model that can be permanently installed and fitted for pumpout. No plumbing except except a vent line and pumpout line...and because it uses so little flush water, it holds about as many flushes as a 15-18 gal tank connected to a manual marine toilet. Be sure it's a marine model, 'cuz RV tanks are emptied by gravity, whereas boat tanks are pumped out. Btw, Steve...it's illegal to put human toilet waste in a dumpster, trash can, or any other container that's handled by workers who aren't wearing bio-hazard protective gear. You can bury it, though.

Peggie, a good idea but...

Peggie, I like the idea of having a pumpable pottie but after looking at the spec's for the 965MSD it is too tall @ almost 16". I measured the available height in my H22 and 14" tall is max. Do you know of any other pumpout capable toilets that would fit a H22?

Wag Bag Disposal (response to Peggie)

http://www.thepett.com/wag2.html "Always dispose of properly in landfill approved trash" WAG Bags can also be used in other "river style" toilet systems such as, Boom Boxes, Rocket Boxes, and various River bank toilets. The degradable WAG bag contains a bioactive non-toxic gelling powder that encapsulates liquid and solid waste, neutralizes odors, initiates and accelerates decomposition. Full bags can simply be put into the provided zip-close, puncture resistant containment bag, and thrown in any normal trash container. These bags comply with federal standards for disposal in landfills and will degrade along with gell and waste in six to eight months. Each bag is good for 3-4 uses.

Did a bit of research on this...

"Approved for disposal in landfills" doesn't address getting it TO the landfill. And while there are no federal laws prohibiting the disposal of human waste in public trash cans and dumpsters, some state and municipal health departments have banned it. Some state "no discharge" laws/regulations require that toilet waste be disposed of only at "approved" facilities--which is intended to mean that holding tanks can only be emptied by pumpout, and that portapotties can't be dumped down toilets in marina rest rooms...but can also be interpreted (if a marina manager wanted to) as banning disposal of human waste--including compost--in trash cans and dumpsters. So keep on keepin' on...but if you cruise away from your home marina, just be prepared for a marina to decide that you can't do that here. IMO, the Wag Bag looks like a great idea for camping...but I'm not a fan of having to carry any waste, in any form off the boat to get rid of it.

Pete...one solution that has worked for others

Though I can't say specifically Hunter 22s. If the portapotty has to fit under a settee cushion, removing the lid takes just enough off the top for it to fit. The cushion then becomes the "cover" over the bowl. Since any waste in it isn't in the bowl, but completely concealed in the tank below, it's no more unpleasant than leaving the lid up on any toilet bowl. If that won't work, the only other solution is small 2-3 gal model. They are available as "pumpable" models...but hold so little that it's hardly worth the effort--and also the cost in many areas--to pump out...so if you have to go that route, you might as well stick with the portable model. Btw...what didn't WM like about the Sanipottie?

Peggy, while on the subject....

...doesn't someone sell a portable pump to pump-out the sanipotti while at sea?

It exists, William...

And can be either manual diaphragm pump (which can double as an emergency bilge pump, btw) or a macerator pump. It's not portable, though...it's installed and used to dump a permanently installed portapotty the same way it's installed to dump any other tank--a y-valve in the pumpout line that sends waste out one side to the pumpout fitting, out the other side to the macerator and thru-hull. No pump is needed for a portable tank...just carry it up to the cockpit and pour it over the side...I recommend the LEE side.

Thanks Peggy. I'll remember that!

Lets see....windward side to light a cigarrette, leeward side to dump the portapotti. I imagine if i ever get it wrong it would be a learning experience that i wouldn't soon forget! (or tell about) :O

wag bag with sanipottie?

I see the bag at the West Marine web site, and also the link provided, but seems to be for use only with the Pett system. Will it work with the SaniPottie?

wag bag use

It will work with a 5 gallon bucket if that's all you have. The only question would be is the container deep enough for it to be used 3 to 4 times. I could see where a shallow bowl might make that a problem. The bags are funnel / v-shaped and pretty deep. I let the extra hang over the sides and then put the seat down.

Human waste

If dumping "all" human waist disposal is banned from trash cans then the disposable diaper industry has a problem. Wag Bags soak everything up like a diaper does. Turns it to jell.
