New Orleans / Mandeville

The Mandeville area on Lake Ponchatrain has several marinas that allow live aboard. The rates vary depending on the size of your boat, of course, but should run in the $250 - $350 per month range. The sailing on Lake Ponchatrain is good with fairly easy access to the Gulf for extended cruises. Mandeville (on the north shore of Lake Ponchatrain) is a quiet, small town atmosphere with several areas of historical significance. It has scenic bike trails, hiking, fishing. The climate is the same as you have in Pass Christian. It's where I plan to settle. Good luck.

Pirate's Cove Marina

Pirate's Cove Marina, Elberta, AL Easy access to the Gulf of Mexico, great sailing in and around Perdido Bay, close enough to moderate sized town for provisions, secluded enough to enjoy the quiet. Full working marina. Dolphins feed in marina every morning between 6-6:30. Great food and excellent conversations. Home of the best cheeseburger you'll ever consume. Story has it that Jimmy Buffett wrote "Cheeseburger in Paradise" about the burgers cooked at Pirate's Cove.

Cheeseburger in Paradise claim

Ma Ruby's on Harbour Island ('briland) in the Bahamas sports an autographed picture on the wall of the bar with Jimmy B. and Ma herself yucking it up. The autograph says something like - and this is a paraphrase - To Ma, your's is the cheeseburger in paradise. Last time we were there we arrived as Jimmy's plane was just taking off. I wonder how many bars in the Caribean latitudes have the same photo on the wall? That Jimmy is quite a huckster. All the success to him. Anyway, sounds like your port-o-call would be a nice place to settle down and live-aboard. I'd love to try the cheeseburgers and beer too!! On 'briland its a cheesburger, conch fritters and an ice cold Kalick to wash it all down. Cheers - Geof P.S. I forgot to add the url for a description of the Kalick beer/brewery - here it is, sorry that it's in the text of the message. http://www.bahamasgateway.com/kalik_beer.htm

Harbour Island and Eleuthera

I'll have to agree on the greatest Cheezeburger in Paradise at Ma's. Been going to Eleuthera for 40 some years, since I was a little kid. We have long time Bahamian Friends in Gregory Town and have explored every inch of that part of the world. Beautiful beaches, coves and anchorages around every corner. We just acquired a 1990 Hunter 335 and are planning to sail there next spring. My favorite anchorage will be in Gregory Town Cove, and of course...Jimmy Buffett will be playing on the CD player all the way....big fan, big fan.
