I am in the process of rigging my h23 to fly a cruising asym spinnaker. My question was where should I install the blocks? I have bought 2 harken blocks of which I know can handle the load of a spinnaker. Should I mount them aft of the jib winches, closer to the stern? My concern with that is the sheets would run from the chute to the winch to the block then the line would run forward. Wouldn’t this angle put too much strain on the winches? I plan to mount them with some washers underneath the fiberglass but am still concerned that a line running at a 30 degree angle through the block would cause the block to want to pop out. I’m not sure I explained myself clearly so I have included a diagram of my plan; please any help would be greatly appreciated. http://www.websdf.com/boat/spin.html Steve

Let me give you another idea

Steve, You want to give the chute as much freedom as you can so the sheet should go to the block first and then to your winch. Can you place the turning blocks at several spots? For instance in light airs, you place the turning blocks aft like you have them in the illustration. In heavier air you can move them forward to keep the chute under more control. My personal feeling is that washers under the block are too light, even if you get the biggest that you can. I would suggest a piece of plywood (at least 1/4 inch) or better yet a piece of aluminum. Even in a H23, you chute will generate a good load on the block. Another bit of advice although you didn't ask for it, don't put stopper knots at the end of your sheets for the spinnaker. Been there, done that. opps. Les

Sheets go to Turning Block First

Agree with Les - sheets should go to the turning block first. Does the 23 have a spot moulded into the deck for a turning block? Some models do have a spot for turning blocks to be installed and if there is one then it should be fairly obvious. Suggest contacting Hunter so see what they had a spot specifically designed for turning blocks.

I put mine...

on my rear pulpit, where the safety line gate attaches. This is on a H26, but I would think yours is the same. I run my sheets outside the standing rigging, back thru the block and up to the winch. I've really never needed to use the winch with the asym wo I usually just run the sheet to thte cleat by the winch. Works for me...
