Hello, although I have been "cruising" this forum for a number of years and found it very useful, this is my first post..

Has anyone out there installed an air conditioner on an early to mid '80s C&C 32? I would like to hear about the best place to do this. I have a couple of spots in mind but would love some input from anyone who has already done this. I'm thinking about the Webasto 9000 which measures H x W x D: 11-9/32" x 14-7/8" x 15-1/2".

Thanks.

Hello yoleon,

First qualifier: I don't own a C&C 32 and never have owned one.

I have removed an air conditioning system (water circulating type) from an Oday 30 and installed it in an Oday 34. The 30's system had been owner installed by utilizing the space under the nav station and taking the water from an addition of a "T" on the raw water intake for the engine. "T" was after the shut off valve. Air conditioner and engine would not be running at the same time because the AC used shore power. (Maybe all AC does?) The water was exhausted via a through hull fitting up near the rub rail.

Our Oday34 had V berth and head arrangement like your C&C (according to the drawings on saliboatdata) except the head was on the port side. I installed the compressor on a shelf I built in the bottom of the hanging locker. Intake water came from a "T" on the raw water intake for the head. I added a fitting for exhaust of the water. Deciding where to drill the hole for that fitting was interesting. Think, measure, mark, think again, measure again, think a few more times before putting drill to fiberglass. the opening was well up the side of the hull, but not to the rub rail. Shut off valves on that exhaust line too. Just need to remember to open it as part of the proceedure when using the AC. The vented door on the hanging locker could be closed without starving the compressor for air. Also, a drain tube for condensation was run to the bilge much like for the icebox.

I put a metal "T" on the air outlet of the compressor and ran 4 inch plastic hose (like dryer hose, but for engine compartment ventilation) to the adjustable vents. One vent to the V berth and one to the main cabin. Actually those vents were on the forward and aft bulkheads that formed the hanging locker. Easy to run. Vents could be shut or open and angled by turning them to direct the air flow.

Best Wishes, Phil

thanks for the info Phil, the hanging locker is one of my options because it has the space and it's only 3 ft behind a spare seacock; this was a coastal boat and rigged for overboard discharge. but i would hate to lose that "closet space", much as it is.. i have since eliminated the overboard discharge and plugged and sealed the seacock but it's there...

Hanging locker is where ours is. Use a seperate seacock. I am not a fan of Ting off and sharing.

Have condensate drip via tube into the bilge
