I am looking for recommendations on the 3 best ocean going long distance cruisers. Is a Hunter model one of these? What might be two boats from other manufacturers?

Only you can answer this?

That's like asking what's the best car or refrigerator, or TV, or anything else. It depends 100% on your needs. The perfect cruiser for one can be totally unacceptable for others. What are your criteria? What is your situation? Is money a factor? (You said best, not best value.) Do you prefer speed, asthetics, comfort, space? Every boat is a compromise and you can't have it all. That said an average boat equipped well after purchase can be a "better" blue water cruiser than any base boat straight from a manufacturer. So is it really meaningful to rate manufacturer's? If the 3 best boats were decided there would only be 3 boats out there to choose from. Why would anyone buy something unless they thought it was the best for their needs?

Asking the right question = 90% of the answer....

Dear Mark, Well, let's see, there is the QE 1, the QE 2 and the QE3 (or is that one still on the drawing board?). Pretty darn good ocean-going long distance cruising boats, by any standard. Wouldn't place the Titanic in quite the same category though (although some parts of it were holding up well, last time I saw one of Ballard's programs on TV). Hope my answer did justice to your question :) Flying Dutchman

Three Boats

I aked the same question and posed it to several veteren sailors and brokers. Answer: Islander, Hans Christian and Baba.

The best boat is...

the one that takes you there. If you buy and great boat and then can't go for whatever reason it was a crummy choice. If you buy a boat and actually go cruising it was a good choice. Pretty simple. About broker recommendations... Ask a different broker and you'll get 3 different answers. Probably inline with what they sell or used to sell or used to own. Talk about bias.

Best is GREAT

Enjoyed the responses. QE 1 is tied up at Long Beach being used as a hotel and isn't about to leave terra-firma. QE 2 is a possibility. The presidential yacht was available. If the principle object is bluewater cruising, then take your boat budget to the market and buy all the boat your budget will cover and get with the cruising. NEVER pick a craft beyond your means and work the rest of your days paying for it. Have a plan, a working budget, and make it happen.

About your question...........

Having done a bit of cruising in some "less than perfect" boats, I can tell you that nearly every person will fail long before the boat does. Mechanical failures in boats that cause the boat to sink are statistically rare; pilot error is much more common. The safest thing to do would be to realistically appraise your own abilities and experience, and remedy anything that isn't where you think it should be. After that, you just need a bit of luck, a little money, and a lot of courage. People have crossed the Atlantic in 12 foot sailboats. MC

IF YA THINK HUNTER IS DON'T GO

Hunter makes coastal cruisers, if you don't know that stay out of the blue, if you want to know the names of the best blue water boats, the first is the campernicholson 31footer, the next is the southern sross 31', and last is the allied seawind 31' these boats are designed both seaworthy & seakindly to take you anywhere you wish to go.

Tom...

Ya that should satisfy about 1% of the cruising crowd! Clearly the best boat is VERY subjective.
