Best location for breaker panel

Opinions, please? I am planning a complete rewire of #3360, therefor anything can be anywhere I want it. and it seems to me that the companionway, being so exposed, could not be the best possible location for the breaker panel. Has anyone relocated theirs? Or wanted to? If you could wave a magic wand and move it anywhere, where would you put it and why?Also, I wonder about the wisdom of my boat's batteries being located in the bilge. Great for stability, but not so great if you took on enough water to fill the keel and submerge the terminals. Any thoughts?Thanks - and please use small, simple words because I am still an electrical dunce (electridiot?). I have some books on the subject I'm slowly working through. So much I need to learn.

My house batteries were moved from the keel to a modified port quarter-birth hatch by the previous owner. I think this was a very good idea to prevent seawater shorting. As far as the electrical panel, I just rewired my boat and went round and round on where to put it. I was looking for a less exposed place but couldn't come up with any solutions. I just ended up putting it back where it was originally but installed waterproof switches, Blue Sea fuse panel, Blue Sea automatic charge relay, and really cool retro- LED indicator lights where the fuses used to be. I also have a Vega series III (Spray-3339) and am rewiring her after having replaced the MD7A with a Beta 14.I keep the batteries in the original position but made a simple wooden double cross structure to hold them in place in case of capsizing and will add 2 battery fuses (160 amp) close by. I will use tinned cables of generous size at all levels. Switch panel/s with fuses: the location under the companionway doesn't look the best because of exposure, as you mention, but also because the wooden panel where it should be fixed has to be removed to access the engine compartment (unless modifications to the original system). I will put 2 6-switch panels, one per side, at the rear part of the shelf, over the main cabin berths. I purchased panels with blade fuses (better than cylinder type and easy to replace): I prefer them to magneto-termic to keep the system as simple as possible.I have replaced all bulb lights with leds and removed the fridge. One 50 W solar panel should cover all my needs (lights, charging iPhone and iPad (I use the iPad for navigation). I do not know if it will be enough to charge also my MAC 13. Marco, I think we may have discussed this before, but have you found a source for your new propeller shaft and seals? I'm still looking. Also, did you find it necessary to make bearer plates for the Beta, or did you just drill and tap into the factory bearers? My wife and I hoisted the Beta into the boat last week, and it looks to me like bearer plates will be necessary. It's pretty cool, we are doing identical work on identical boats. :)

Hi Gene,On Vega series III the engine base (factory bearer) is higher than on series I (probably because the petrol engine sump was smaller). The marine mechanic who mounted the new engine on my Vega noticed that there was no need to add bearer plates. He told me that whenever the situation allows, better not to add extra layers between the hull support and the engine feet. So no bearer plates.Shaft seals: I kept the original system that I had overhauled in 2012 obtaining all spares from VAGB. After overhauling I motored for about 500 hours and had no problems (no leak).Prop shaft and prop: I ordered them together with the Beta 14 from the Italian Beta dealer (www.scandiesel.it).The shaft has a diameter of 25 mm and a length (1.5 m) in excess of what required. It has been cut to the needed length based on my specificities (coupling Centaflex 12) and enough space behind the rear shaft bearing to allow positioning a rope cutter. The longer the shaft behind the rear bearing, the more vibrations and wear of the bearing. The shaft came with the specific tapering and key.Prop: I purchased a 3 fixed blades 12x9" to be kept as spare and a Max-Prop 3 blades feathering of 33 cm diameter...I will try to add photos in the specific session.Hope this helps :) From: "gene_neill@... didn't want to bother you by asking for pics! Sadly, our engines and
mounts are slightly different. Mine is probably older, having been
first purchased in early 2012 by a guy, who sold it to another guy, who
sold it to me. I guess what I need to do is just get in there and raise
the feet to the necessary height, and see how they look. Again, thank
you very much for your help. I appreciate it very much.
