In my second summer of sailing my 1974 25 ft Hunter-such a beauty! and very gentle on the new sailor. We sail in our own Cayuga Lake-motor in and out of our slip and often back to shore at the end of the day (2 or 3 hours?). I had a new motor mount put on recently and am looking for a new outboard-but am unsure of the best size. I am considering a Tohatsu 6HP with extra long shaft...recommendations? Thank you!

Excellent Choice

Only additional thoughts are:

Is there a Tohatsu dealer around? May be worth a few more dollars to walk into a dealer and get a part vs. ordering one.

Keep the ethanol out of it.

We had a 1978 Hubnter25 shoal draft on the Chesapeake bay, which came to us with a 9.9 Johnson with electric start. With the stern mounted bracket, we tilted the engine and lifted the lower unit and prop clear of the water when sailing. Six HP sounds a little low for 2-3 hours motoring; 9.9 may be more than needed on an inland lake; vbut I'd be thinking about 8HP.

Thanks so much for both replys. I do have a Tohatsu dealer fairly nearby (40 minutes). Unfortunately-the motor mount that I have has a weight limit of 59 lbs. And so the 6HP with an external tank seems to be the best that I can do. Thank you again...

Had one of these girls with a 4 stroke johnson sailmaster and working (4 blade prop). Sailed barnegat bay and envorins with chop, currents and tides with no problem. Don't forget she is a two tonner and a little torque goes a long way. I should note that a two stroke evinrude with a powerboat prop used to suck her stearn down and couse her to plow through the water. Reagrds, redrex
