Updating faucet and re-installing stainless sink in galley (heavy use, of course). Countertop 3/4" marble over plywood. Requesting recommends and reasons why re: best watertight, adhesive sealant for each or both jobs. Bring it on, swabbies.

If it's a self rimming sink, plumbers putty
Self-rimming? I'm ignorant there, unless you mean the sink has a rim extending around its perimeter, which it does. From what I can see without disassembling, that rim appears to be set between the countertop (marble) and the plywood beneath. Will plumber's putty offer any hold-in-place, weight bearing adhesive or just watertight-ness? Thanks for response.

If it's between the marble and ply underlayment, it's an undermount type, not self-rimming, most likely.

No, it won't hold the sink in place by itself.

You want a sealant, not an adhesive. They are not the same thing. The sealant should have some stretch and remain pliable over time for a long lasting seal. Also, what if and when you need to remove the sink, fix the marble, etc? An adhesive would be a problem. Mechanical fasteners are needed here; the type depends upon how the sink is installed.

Also, while I am no plumber, I wonder about the sink rim being sandwiched between the plywood and marble. Seems odd to me. If you get any kind of leak, the water will wick into the plywood and you will have a major problem over time. Are you sure the sink does not sit into the marble and the rim fit over top of the marble?

Self rimmiing as noted is when the sink sits on top of the counter top. It does sound like the sink you have is an undermount but God only knows how it was originally installed. If it is sandwiched between the counter top & plywood, sounds like the weight of the sink is supported by the plywood, you only need to be concerned with "sealing" above the sink rim & the underside of the countertop.

I think Graham needs to clarify the mount. The way I read it is he has a marble top (made to standard countertop thickness by having a plywood bottom) and the sink is a standard self rimming or drop in sink... If so, plumbers putty as mentioned. With a plywood base, its not likely going to be under mount unless you do the sandwich thing in which case you will install it on the plywood as described and put plumbers putty on top too then set the marble. You may have to route the plywood so the sink rim sets flush with the top of the plywood.

Thanks friends. Obviously I've got to get in under the sink and have a closer look at what's going on. As they say in Cali, "I vill be back."

Put silicone on it. Don't over complicate a simple situation, it's not a through-hull. There's a hundred million sinks held in with the stuff right now, that has worked very well for years..

If the rim sits between the sandwich how can you put in a new one without removing the marble top? Why not use Maine Sail's butyl tape for this application?

Silicone may be a problem if it was installed with it originally. Removing the old silicone will require a lot of effort or the new stuff won't stick to it. If butyl is good for deck fittings getting rained on for years it should be good for a sink getting wet once in a while. Is there any toxicological concerns with it?
