best anchor for cat-22 on lake ?

I've a brand new-to-me 1981 cat 22 which came with a small mushroom anchor (12 lbs about) and about six feet of chain, then rope. Is this enough to hold on a lake with a weedy bottom? Would really want to be sure because we want to go swimming off of it and don't want it to drift away. If not enough, does anyone have suggestions as to type and weight which would be best along with where/how to best store it on boat? My boat has no anchor locker in bow deck. Previous owner is not available to ask how he did it. Thank you all in advance.

Danforth

I would NOT rely on a mushroom anchor! You can pick up a decent used Danforth style anchor (15 lbs should be sufficient) or buy one cheap at West Marine new. If there's no well for the chain, you can store it all in a bucket. Just make sure to coil it in there nicely so it plays out cleanly.LaDonna

I purchased a Fortress FX-11 and a Bruce 7.5 kg for my new Catalina 22. Both are intentionally oversized.Just got back from 2 weeks at anchor and sailing in a clay & sand bottom, very weedy lake: the Bruce fits in the locker and set very well through the weedbeds. The Fortress, because it is too large for the locker,was used once only. Fluke anchors (Danforth) need long scope to set well, esp. in weeds, but are the anchor of choice for most small cruisers. The Bruce was terrific and I invite you to consider one.Lakes often mean short scope due to small swingrooms in bays etc. That's where the Danforths get into trouble and the Bruce shines.tom
