We are planning to take a 47' from BVI to New-York at the end of the month, on a straight line, with an option to Norfolk. We are planning to go on the Atlantic, rather than between the Bahamas and Florida. All of a sudden some people mentionned the Bermuda triangle and some experience in losing instrument readings. Has anyone have any experience of this sort ?is there a need to account for this ? Sincerely, Jean Hrab

carry back up electronics

While making a delivery passage from Norfolk to Puerto Rico aboard a Jeanneau 51, we danced along the line from Bermuda to San Juan. We kind of joked about what would happen if we crossed the line. Well, one night on the overnight watch, we did wander into the "forbidden zone" a little bit (a couple of miles). Not really thinking too much about it we were puzzled when all of our electrical power just died! Using my handheld GPS I established our position and found that we had indeed crossed the line. We corrected the course, and once we got to the "safe" side of the line, all the power came right back up. The boat's owner was on board and refused to believe in the triangle's effects. Whatever it was scared the "you know what" out of myself and my mate. I would definately suggest you carry a backup GPS and radio! (just in case) Happy sailing!

Unmitigated nonsense!

I can hardly believe my eyes when I read this. The Bermuda triangle myth has been debunked a hundred times. I have seen interviews with the journalist who originally created the idea, in which he admitted making it up for sensationalism. Let me ask you a question - what is the proposed mechanism by which a ship would lose its power and a hand-held GPS would continue to function? Do you really believe that there is an invisible line on the ocean floor - on one side you are in grave danger from forces unknown, while on the other side the known laws of physics are obeyed? I have watched the scary TV programs (complete with eery music) on the pseudo-science cable TV stations and laughed at some of the assertions. Pure sensationalism... As a scientist/teacher I am the first to admit that we don't know everything about the world we live in, BUT I am sure that the Bermuda triangle nonsense is nothing more than a creation of man's fertile mind. Relax, and have a fantastic trip! Derek
