I'm considering the purchase of a 1978 Mariner with some repaired damage to the hull and a mast that has been straightened with "mechanical advantage". I haven't made the trip to see it yet, but would like to know what to look for and what is involved (i.e. $$$) if a new mast is needed.

$$$$

dwyermast.com for idea of prices on new mast, look for metal fatigue cracks creases etc in bend area, indentations etc will weaken mast. if just bowed, may straighten when raised and stays tightened unless bend is above the stays. rudy at dr marine can be contacted also.

caution on bending

After reading some stuff about bending a mast back, I tried it on my DS 1 mast this weekend. It snapped just below the lower spreaders. It looked weak there anyway from corrosion and all the holes in that ares for spreaders and spinnaker blocks. Maybe I was lucky I snapped in the yard rather than on a high speed jibe with the chute up. My lessons: don't push too hard on a rebend job and leave well enough alone.
