Well, I've finally done it. Lowering the mast today I had the jin pole pointing too far forward (didn't have the forward block & tackle far enough out) and the pole bent allowing the mast to drop gracefully into place the last 4 feet (thank goodness).

Anyone (George?) have any suggestions on best ways to replace or straighten & reinforce the jin pole for a 260? Thanks!

bent gin-pole

check the date base for a really good repair for a bent pole. Basicly a length of gas pipe is pushed inside of the gin pole to stiffen it. I use my trailer bow winch instead of the main sheet to lower and rise the mast. I find that I have better control over the mast when the effort gets high coming of the resting/support pole. Gary.

Thanks, I'll look into the data base and gas pipe. I usually drop my mast on the water, because the ramp lot for prepping boats going in and out is usually too crowded to do it there, so I can't easily use the trailer winch.
Thanks again!

Contact Hunter

When I had my 260 I had major problems with the Jin poles.

When you contact them, be sure to give them a detailed drawing of the pole you have. There are currently two models out there and you'll be shooting 50/50 if you just ask to replace the Jin pole. I actually made a drawing of mine to show which direction the slot at the bottom of the pole went so that I could have the correct one. They shipped it out in a couple of days.

I eventually purchased a small electric wench and that cured all problems.

Buy a dowell rod

I bought a piece of dowell rod at Home Depot. It was slightly smaller, but I wrapped a few layers of tape around it in several places along the length and shoved it up inside the pipe. It really stiffened the pipe up and did not add much weight.
