Bent Fuel Injection Limiter

I'm considering purchasing a 79 Hunter that has a 2QM15 Yanmar engine. That engine is not currently running as the fuel Injection Limiter has bent as in the photo below. Has anybody see this before and if so what was the cause?

Perhaps someone with a hammer was upset with the limits being placed on their fun...
Is it important to know how it happened or to know how to fix it?

I'm actually fine with the hammer explanation. I'd prefer that to the unknown. The fix is rather trivial, but since I'd be buying a boat with an old engine that was apparently overstressed in at least one way, it makes me wonder if the same event damaged other parts with imminent failure lurking. In other words its a price thing.

Dunno, I don't see a way to bend it except in a bad disassembly/assembly.. I don't know how or if enough force could be applied to the linkage through the governor to be able to bend the stop ..?? check to see if the rack and linkage moves freely.. if it does, should be good.. if it feels sticky or draggy, it may have been damaged by someone screwing the stop in too far.. or by removing the linkage or pump without removing the stop .. most likely cause of damage.. Seems like the gear case cover might have to be off in order to damage that stop??
My limited knowledge of the QM is that if the crankcase vent gets plugged, they are prone to runaway.. someone may have screwed in the stop forcefully after having a runaway and not diagnosing the problem correctly.. Because the dipstick tube enters the oil pan below the oil level on that engine, a plugged crankcase vent will normally blow liquid oil out of the tube and make a real mess.. it is a lot worse if the piston rings are past their service life..

Claude,
I had the same thoughts as everything you said in the first paragraph. It seems like a relatively protected part that shouldn't have extreme force on it.
I didn't know about the vent issue so I'll have to keep that in mind.
Thank you for your comments.

Have you heard this engine run? Sounds like no. I'd have a price for a replace engine on the bargening table. Don't know the asking price, but that boat is worth a lot less without a good functioning engine

DJ,
that is precisely the issue about the limiter spindle being bent. I haven't heard the engine run and apparently the mechanic hasn't found a replacement part, so maybe it needs to be machined. Consequently it is unclear when the engine will be running.
If the boat needs a new engine, it would dramatically reduce the price as that isn't reflected in the asking price.

It's not clear to me why you are getting this limiter fixed. I'd tell the owner here's my price as I have to put an engine in the boat. If you want the price that includes a running engine, show me it runs. I certainly would not go fixing parts on someone else's boat to see what runs or not. As is, the boat doesn't have a running engine, price it accordingly.

Just my 2 cents worth. There are a lot of boats on the market.

On my sea trial. I identified an over heating condition. Told the Seller that I like the boat but the engine over heating was a deal breaker. His mechanic got to work. Made repairs and on the next test the engine temps stayed within parameters.
I made the purchase. A year later the symptoms returned. It was an old engine. This time the problem was clearly evident. The water pump failed. Replaced the 42 year old water pump and all has been well. No over heating issue.
Moral... Let the seller fix the problem if he wants the sale.
  1. Know where your weaknesses are and
  2. be ready to fix if your boat is worth it.
Obviously I thought the boat was worth the minimal cost fix I completed.

DJ,
I'm not fixing his engine; merely trying to understand the situation. I'm working on pulling together pricing on other items that need to be addressed so that I can establish a value (with or without a working motor). What that really means is that I'm mostly waiting on companies to supply me with quotes.

Hi John,
I'm just waiting for them to fix it. Spoke with the yard and they don't have any estimate as to when they'll have it back together as they can't find the part new or used. Apparently Yanmar hasn't had it available for "the last 15 years". The yard does have it's own machine shop and said that would be the last resort. Seems like they must be close making that decision.
