I just found that the threaded end of my forestay is bent. I dont know how or when the hell this happened. It must have been during transport. How do you go about getting a new one, and attaching it to the forstay? It appears to be crimped on? I sailed it in a light wind with it like that, but dont know how strong it is... Josh

Turnbuckle

Josh - A bent turnbuckle is dangerous in bigger wind because all of the stress runs along the long edge - the outside of the bend - and you don' t have full strength. The fitting is swaged on, a process like crimping but under serious pressure. I would take the wire to rigger when you put the boat to bed and have them replace the fitting. If the wire is of unknown age or is more than maybe ten years old I would simply replace the wire. A headstay with fittings should cost around $100. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Oh GREAT...

SO now this boat is going to start costing me money to operate? I should have figured that!!! :) I'm going to assume that the stays are orignal. Everything else seems to be. You say after ten years, but should I take into account that the boat wasn't used very often for at least the past ten years, if not more? I even think I have the original sails, but I don't know exactly how to go about checking. It has an a big blue O with an inset 22 on the main. Looked original to me! The sails are just starting to wear out by the looks of it to me. If I get new stays I'd probably want to thicken them up at the same time. Might as well give the boat some more strength while I'm fixing the problem. Think I'd have any problem say doubling the diameter of the stays? And is it a hundred bucks about per stay? So thats 600 bones for them all? Acursed sailboat! Heh. Josh

Josh, side shrouds are cheaper than fore/aftstays

Two lower shrouds for my O'27 cost $96 (including shipping) from a rigger in Kemah TX. You'r total price should be much less than $600. Plus, you may not have to replace them all.
