When I took down my mast i put a bend in my CDI furler. I was wondering if anyone has any experience in straightening one out. If so how did you do it.

If you simply put a curving bend in the furler extrusion it should be fairly easy to straighten by supporting it over the arc of the bend and carefully bending it back. If it has a kink in it or the track is collapsed, scrap it and buy a new one.

How about posting a photo of the bent section so we can see. I assume it is a FF2 system. Then we can better advise you.

Per Crazy Dave's assumption, if it is the plastic foil, heat will make it more pliable. CDI recommends slipping the foil into a piece of black ABS pipe and leaving it to bake in the sun for awhile.
Another route may be the judicious use of a heat gun.

Plastic has a memory and wants to return to its original state. Lay it out flat in the sun. Pull it straight, stake it out if need be. Then let the sun work its magic.

With response to laying it out in the sun i assume that i should wait until summer.

I've tried on two different boats that came with CDI furlers that the plastic luff extrusion became bent because the previous owners just laid the furled headsail along the mast and tied it there. Yup, CDI says just lay it in the sun and it will straighten out. Well, I had them in the hot Southern California sun for weeks and that never did a thing to either one. Went to a hanked on jib on the Capri-18, and wasted the money to buy a new luff extrusion for the C-22. Ended up selling the new genoa and the CDI furler with the new luff extrusion to someone who just had to have one. Put a new hanked on jib up front, rigged up a simple downhaul and never looked back.

When CDI rolls up the extrusion to ship it, they are right, lay it in the sun and it lays out nice. But if it's got kinks and "S" bends in it from not being properly supported while trailering or being stored with the mast down, you'll need a new plastic extrusion. Guess folks get so excited about their CDI furler, they forget to read the manual.

Yeah, it depends on how tight the bend is. I rolled mine against the curve and tied it. I released it after a few days, laid it flat, and it flattened out. If you have a kink... that is different.

Thanks,
