There are a few Beneteau First Series that I am looking at. Beneteau First 35s5, 35s7, 36s7 and the 38s5. Can anyone comment on these boats? They are classified as a race cruisers. Does that mean they are not great for cruising (just average) and not great for racing (just average too)? Are they faster than the Beneteau Oceanis models? If I want to race one of these one day, are they be competitive (with a decent crew)? Also, do they hold some resale value or should I consider something else? Thanks

1st series

I have a First 310 and have crewed on a 1st 36.7. My personal opinion is that this line is a compromise in that they are 'good-to-great' at both racing and cruising but not absolutely ideal at either. If you want to do both, as I do, this line makes sense. Based on the models you list, the 36.7 may be a particularly good choice if you want to race as there may be a one design fleet nearby. That said, that particular model also seems to perform competitively at its PHRF rating, at least in the mid-atlantic. On the cruising side, I think the compromise may be a bit more evident. The larger racing hulls provide deeper draft and that can make gunkholing a bit more work. go for a shoal draft witha racing rig and the boat will be tender... Just matters what mix is 'right' for you quality and service wise, I am more than satidfied

36s7

Of all the First series, I do like the look of the 36s7. Can anyone offer any feedback about this boat? How is the performance for racing? There are 2 versions...a classic fractional and a taller race rig version. I have been looking at the classic version with the 6'1" draft (steel keel). Any other info about PHRF ratings would be good too. Thanks again.

Interiors

One thing you'll want to look at in the xx-S-5 series are the interiors. The -S- series are not the same boats as the .7 series, at least as far as the interiors are concerned. I'm not sure if the hulls are same lineage as the original First series, or the current First (dot)7 series. The "S" series boats have very European style interiors in that they have lots of curved panels, rounded corners, round sinks, and chromed accents against very dark woods. They also did some "unique" things with the portlights and fixed windows, lots of wraparound styling. Hope that adds some perspective! Cheers, Tim
