I am looking at purchasing a 1983 Beneteau first 35. I have thus far been unable to find out much information on the boat - seems there are not that many in the USA though, and nothing on the Beneteau USA website. Could someone out there who has knowledge of the boat, or who could steer me to a knowledge source, contact me - my email address for direct contact is usna19742cox.net. thanks in advance!

Carl's sail calculator

It looks like a beamy fast boat according to Carl's sail calculator. I compared it to my Pearson 323. It looks much faster weighs less has more sail area. Capsize ratio is over 2 which is a bad sign for blue water. the comfort ratio means that you'll get beat up. These are just numbers but together they give you an ideal of how the boat will perform. Just the weight and sail area indicate that it should be fast.

a comparison on the Sail Calculator with the J35. Same hull speed, same lwl.

Beneteau 35 or First 35??

Specs: Ratings J I P E LOA LWL Beam Dft Disp Bal Beneteau 35 126 126 13.3 45.2 39.7 12.8 35.0 28.9 12.1 6.2 10,450 4840 Tom, the J35 is a TOTALLY different boat. The LOA is about the only thing they have in common. A J35 rates a 72 whereas a Ben 35 rates 126. A world of difference between these boats. A better comparison would be a C&C 35 and even that is a very different animal.

You are correct that the J35 and Beneteau are different boats. I was reacting to the other Tom who compared the Beneteau to the Pearson 323. The Bene/J35 have the same hull speed, but other measures are different. Considering the Bene is a race boat I am surprised it does not have a higher rating, although a 126 is not exactly a bad rating.

The only reason that I compared the beneteau to the Pearson is that I own a Pearson 323. The Pearson is fairly slow, narrow and seakindly. Only a 10.5' beam and #4500's of lead in a #12,500 boat.
