Has anyone had problems with keel rust? Mine is brand new and where the folded keel meets the bottom of the boat (at the tip closest to the rudder) the epoxy surrounding the keel has cracked exposing the iron underneath. It is in a difficult place as I need to lift the boat to lower the keel a bit to get at the spo and then grind out and add numerous coats of epoxy to reseal. Can the boat rest on it's lowered keel with supports for the hull? Does anyone have a experience with this situation?

More thoughts.

Iron keels rust. We can do things that limit it, but getting used to the idea helps! ;^)

I would talk to your dealer; its a new boat; right? The keel should come from them in great condition.

If you do treat it, the trick is to get to bare metal (no rust) and then re-seal.

Iron keels rust. Even if you start out perfect, the first time you bang that 6 foot of draft into the bottom, you will likely chip the epoxy and start a bit of rusting.

YES the boat can sit forever on its folded keel. In fact tham make beaching legs for it to use in high tidal areas where boats are often left to dry.

Thanks for your response yes the dealer has to repair it. The problem is I am 300 miles from the dealer so I will have to get a local guy and send them the bill.
We go in the water tomorrow for the first time.
