Ken

Recently was given the Beneteau factory tour (Marion SC). They produce 400 boats/year and make use of high tech equuipment and employ very hard working craftsmen. I did find the fumes from the chemicals very strong and noticed that very few of the workers made use of protective breathing aparatus. Anyways, they all do a great job, have very high quality standards and they build them fast. I do feel that they offer great value for the price. Looking for opinions about modern boat manufacturing. Happy New Year

There was recently an article in one of the magazines (I believe Cruising World) in which they did a detailed factory in Marion.

If you're in the St. Petersburg area....

go tour the Island Packet factory. It is well worth your time. My sailing buddies and I really enjoyed it. Although I've never seen it, they say touring the nearby Caliber factory is worth it too. D. Dixon s/v CD EXPRESS

did both recently

In September, I did both the Caliber and IP tours as well as took the 3 hr ride from St Pete to do the H tour. No comparison! Both the Caliber and IP tours showed me why these boats cost what they do compared with Hunters, Catalinas and Bennys. I have nothing against the latter 3 and have one but the differences in construction were startling - as are the price differences.
