Hi. Has anyone removed their early '80's First 42 traveller track and teak block? We believe the teak block has some rot and want to remove the track and block to check. Wondering how difficult this would be. Thanks.

@Drewskie , we haven’t had to do that job(yet) but as our boats are similar I’ll keep up with this thread in the hopes of learning something for the future.

Have the same boat and replaced mine
You need to remove the headliner,if the countersunk bolts are siezed be prepared to sawsall them off.
You can certainly debate this point, but i chose to remove everything and rebuild as original
What i did though when forming the teak base was to lesson the curve not entirely flat but less than factory
Kept the track and hardware now it looks way better than factory. Track had some corrosion underneath so fixed welded and powdercoated it
Traveler is harken big boat stuff replaced bearings
Was all the work worth it? In my mind yes it was but you will have to make that call

Thanks CYQK. Do you have any pictures? Was the teak base fastened/glued to the deck (other than with the countersunk bolts)? Wondering if when the bolts were removed was it easy to lift off the teak base?

Similar issue on my First38. Sheaves dont turn. Screws on the headliners are completely seized. I am new to boat ownership as I have always chartered and would appreciate some dumbed down, step by step instructions (how to saw th es screws, where, where to find replacement sheaves, do they have bearings. Etc. Etc)

Yes the base was covered with adhesive
try to save as much of the old one when you remove it so you can use it for a pattern
When i removed mine some of the laminated pieces came apart so had to glue them back together
Had 1x4 teak and ripped on my table saw with a close angle built in to reduce forming, started with the top piece used the track as a guide then glued and built up to get the width and height . fired up the belt sander and made lots of dust
The best picture of all this is the one you will develop in your mind
Be careful not to place fasteners in the area that you will need to drill out for line passages

Think it was 6-8 coats of quality clearcoat that i sprayed and polished on looks GREAT!!

keep thread going and i will help as best as i can
good luck!!
Gary

Mind you mine was damaged by fire so if i can rebuild mine you can do your to as well!!!!!!

CYQK, Can you elaborate on how/where exactly you cut off the countersink bolts? And, did you replace any sheaves? Also, what kind/size line do you use on your traveler? Mine is REALLY hard to move and the sheaves are stuck, but I may also not be using the correct rope.

Update - we removed the garage cover (the cover that the companionway slides into when open). Two of the bolts that fasten the traveler track and block to the deck extend through the cover so must be removed before the cover can slide forward and away from underneath the traveler block. We found two bolts did not have nuts! We found one nut lying on top of the companion way cover but didn't find the other. At this point we haven't decided if we will remove the teak block or traveler track. We have asked the wood expert from our local boat yard to evaluate the integrity of the teak block. If there's significant rot we will remove it. We also discovered the companionway cover had broken near the starboard stop. Hopefully we will be able to repair this.
The attached pictures show:
1. the companionway cover with the STB stop piece broken away from the cover
2. a top down view of the traveler, garage and companionway before removing the covers
3. the garage cover removed showing the under side with the two embedded nuts for the two bolts that extend from the traveler track through to the garage cover.
4. the top view of the garage cover (before cleaning). The two bolt holes are visible near the centre.
I will update this thread when we have new info.
Cheers
