Vessel is fitted with spare emergency forestay that goes from just under the masthead to the foredeck to enable another headsail tyo be hanked on, should the roller sail fail.

There are two running backstays fitted on the mast at the same height as the baby stay, they are rope with a 4-1 block purchase.

Are these a necessary item and what function do they serve....?

Gotta be adjustable back stay tensioner-- usually these go to the hast head, however.

"Running Backstay, Runners - Adjustable stays used to support and control tension on the mast when the wind is from abaft the beam; temporary backstays used to stabilize the mast and prevent undue flexing due to the pumping action of the sea."

You can't be serious mate...
Running backstays ,,, set them up with the wind AFT and you stand the real risk of inverting,,, and loosing the mast.
They are NOT backstay tensioners either...
Thanks anyway...
