Does anyone experience circuits switching on & off when starting engine? Any ideas why this is happening? The panel is on a 1988 Beneteau 435 ?

If “circuits switching” means tripping a breaker, it’s a voltage spike when starting. If it means making a breaker go “on” rather than “off”, the boat is haunted.

Check all of your grounds first.... dismantle the engine ground buss and clean thoroughly. Also, what kind of condition are your batteries in when you go to start? Prior to getting new batteries, if I was at anchor for a couple of days and attempted to use my bow thruster upon leaving with batteries and 60% my instruments would turn on / off. I cleaned all my ground connections first and that help significantly, however the batteries were 8 years old. Once replaced I never have this issue.

Good Luck

Starting the engine is likely causing a voltage sag. When the voltage drops, some appliances will need to pull more amperage to operate. That extra amperage could be tripping your breakers. Recommend you check connections for corrosion. This is also one of the advantages of having a dedicated starter battery - the voltage drop will not affect other house devices.
