Has anyone thought of changing the steering wheel to a smaller size or actually doing it... i think if it was smaller it would be easier to get around it and move in the cockpit better.. any comments on this... thanx

The fact that Beneteau 361 has a quite large wheel makes sailing wonderful. It feels light, you can steer while sitting at the side and looking the tell tails and it's just perfect.
On the other hand, yes, I agree it does get into your way (though personally I don't mind any longer; you get used to it) but I would never like to replace it with a smaller one. A very good option, but expensive, is to get a folding one (like the one produced by Lewmar).

Hi pdnervo

Im with Philip on this one, I too enjoy the size of the wheel when sitting on the side of the boat, it allows me to look up and check the sail set without having to move and also on those lazy barmy Sundays I can kick back and steer with my foot while sitting in the rear corner seat.

Though I seriously considered changing the wheel as my wife always complained about the difficulty of getting passed when boarding, I decided it would be easier to change the wife Lol.

Hi Pdnervo, I have replaced my 361 wheel with a Lewmar folding wheel and it is great. Opens up the cockpit and I can still steer from the side.

A folding wheel, I believe, is only possible to have with a below deck autopilot. I don't think any wheeldrive could fit.
