Hi all, got a new question about sails. We have a gennaker that came with the boat and I think it came with the original touring package. How are the sheets attached on the 361 ? It doesnt look like the block right in front of the winch is used for this or any block other than the car. I'm used to having these all the way at the stern but that was a smaller boat. Also I havent looked inside the bag yet, there might be clues there :)

Can't help with this one

Gaute sorry I won't be able to help this time as I foolishly chose not to order the genaker package on my 361. Now I wish I had and will some day add it myself. Can't tell you how many times I wanted it in lighter air not to mention the inconvenience of dropping the headsail whenever I want to go up the mast. (the genny halyard is the next best option to take me up) Good luck Mike

Gennaker Set up

I got the Gennaker package when I got the boat new in 2003. The turning block near the base of the winch is for the Jib sheet. There should be a snatch block somewhere in you boat that is used for the Gennaker sheet. The snatch block should be clipped to the toerail almost at the very stern. The Gennaker sheet is run thru the block back up to the winch on the cockpit .... We run the Gennaker sheet up to the winch on the cabin top.

Excellent

thanks for replying Mark and Mike. I havent seen the blocks but perhaps they are in the sailbag, I'm just getting eager to go out there, doubt we'll be using the gennaker at first.... I was also looking at North sails nuffer and others systems for setting it, anyone have experiences with these ?

Gennaker Set up

My wife and I use an sock. I believe it is from ATN. The sock makes double handed sailing extremely easy Check this out, should help you getting started with sail trim for the 361: http://www.neilprydesails.com/ben_frame.htm Good Luck! Mark

NP trim guides

I have read those as I was looking for pricing on a new head sail. Found them very informative and I'll be marking it on the boat before the season starts. I'll be looking into a sock too, never tried them but seem essential for small crew. If only it was June.....

My limited experience

I bought my 361 used so I don't know if all the gear I'm using to fly the gennaker came in the "kit" or not. I have a small block with a caribiner type snap fitting that attaches to the anchor roller, through which the tack pendant is run. I secure the pendant to one of the bow cleats. The sheets are run through large snatch blocks that I clip to the toe railjust aft of the primary winches. The ATN "chute scoop" is a sweet arrangement.

load on toerail

ok I think I got a pretty good idea of how it should work, hope all is in the bad. Would be nice with the shoot helper. I didnt know the toerail would hold that much force, I seen some bent toerails just from being tied to the dock....

Padeyes

If your boat was originally delivered with Genneker hardware, it should have extra padeyes at the bow and one at each corner of the stern. From these you can attach standard swivel blocks. one for the tack line at the bow, and one for each sheet at the stern to turn the sheets forward to the winches. I wouldn't recommend snatch blocks for a couple of reasons. First, good ones are too expensive, second, at the stern you are turning your sheets through too much of an angle. Generally snatch blocks are designed to be wrapped not much more than 135 degrees. More than that puts too much load on the blocks. I will admit that a genneker isn't going to put as much load on the blocks in light air as a bigger jib in heavier air, but loading is still something to consider. As you could imagine, it can be easy to lose a snatch block over the side at a most inopportune moment if a safety line isn't attached, and over time, if you keep attaching to the same point on the to rail, that will begin to become distorted.

No extra padeyes

Hi Doug, there are no extra hardware to be found on the boat. I had a good look on the bow and aft but nothing. I did have a look in the bag and though I couldnt identify this hardware the gennaker does have the ATN scoop thing as well as all lines attached. I read in the log that it has been used so I'm thinking all is in the bag. can't wait to test this out....
