My boat is buried in snow right now, but I'm shopping for a smaller wheel to free up some cockpit space with kids. Wondering if anybody knows whether the steering wheel shaft is straight or tapered? And is it a 1" diameter like most wheels? Appreciate any feedback!

What brand name binnacle is on your boat?
If its Goiot brand (French) you may be able to change out the wheel by removing the bolts from the hub.
The spokes are simply trapped to the hub by that cap. Then you can just locate another wheel of the size you want. Certainly if its the Goiot binnacle, the shaft is most likely metric.
