Sylvio, I have a good friend that sails a 281 and absolutely loves it. We are from the NY area and he keeps it on the Hudson River. I know he has sailed it as far north as Nova Scotia with his family. I really don't have any personal experience as to how they do in club races. Good luck Charlie

Great boats
I have a 1996 281. I sail on an inland lake in winds from 5 to 25. I do not race (officially) but as everyone knows if 2 boats are going the same direction in close proximity to each other, there is a race going on. My 281 fairs very well in these unofficial speed trials even though I have an in-mast main furler that all the "experts" say really slows a boat down. I single hand most of the time and 281's are set up to make that very easy. The workmanship and quality are next to none and for a 28.5' boat, the below decks amenities and space are impressive. The 18 hp Perkins diesel gets the boat to hull speed easily. I haven't had any work on the boat outside of routine maintenance.
