Anyone spent any time recently in the Belize-Guatemala areas. Primarily interested in cost of living there vs Mexico. Mexico is a pretty good bargain these days, but not sure about other countries down that way.

Well that is not totally fair since so is the United States if we want to look at hard numbers. We spent many months cruising through Mexico, Belize and Guatemala in the Rio Dulce and have several friends that are still there now. Belize and Guatemala are cheaper than Mexico but much depends on what you plan to do and where. Belize is in a state of financial discord, but who isn't, as are certain areas of Mexico. There are Ex-Pats in all three and they have established communities in certain places that are somewhat less expensive than the US but not much. We do have several friends that live in Guatemala that are retired and live quite well there, when they would be below the poverty levels in the US. Land is getting expensive in all 3 countries as locals figure out that Americans will pay big bucks. On El Golfetti on the Rio Dulce the cheif of one village offered to sell us the entire village at a great price. So without knowing what exactly you are looking to do it is hard to answer your question. You can read all about our cruise at our Sea Trek site on the signature line and scroll down the left column of Our Posts to

N&E- to live or cruise?

We were considering moving a little further south, and spent some time in Costa Rica, but regardless of what you hear, the cost of living was only about a third cheaper than here. The weather, however, was great- the temps were the same all year, and once you got off the water, you could pick your temperatures by changing elevation...
