The other day I got a private message from someone who was looking at a boat having stated he read alot of my posts. He joined two hours before. If he is reading this my best advice get someone to go with you that knows sailboats
Sometimes I get a bad feeling and I did in this case. I chose not to respond.

Not the best move on your part. You should have responded. That may have been the sound of opportunity knocking. For all you know, he could have been a Nigerian Prince willing to offer you untold riches for sharing your boating knowledge with him. Probably all that he needed was your bank account number to deposit the money.

What risk do you suppose you are inviting by responding to a private message on a sailing forum like this? Any personal information you have chosen to include in your profile or posts has been available to anybody who is a forum member (including the guy who messaged you) for many years.

I use to be a well respected investigator on the east coast before coming a sailboat dealer. In fact some decisions later became law. On Monday someone joins the forum and then sends a privat message. The wording of that message raised alarm bells. I chose not to respond particularly not posting on the forum first asking questions. In addition it was unusual to read all my posts in such a short time or two hours. I merely mentioned this so you could be careful. Why? You do not know who is at the other end I choose to play it safe and not respond given the times we are in. The only reason I posted this was to remind you to be careful. Next time I will not say anything.

I just logged out and was able to search through your posts. Not all of them, as there are quite a few, but this two hour window could go back much further.

It may have been me I must confess! I do apologize if it was and so sorry the private email was worded in such a way to raise an alarm. Crazy Dave, I have sent you another private message formally introducing myself. Again, so sorry for causing concern! Thanks!

hceajudah, welcome to the forums. We are, as you already suspected when you joined, a very thoughtful, helpful, and considerate group of sailors, and, like myself, sailor wannabies. There is a lot of amazing knowledge, and Crazy Dave may be crazy, but he is one of the most knowledgeable. I certainly hope this thoughtful and considering banter doesn't negatively effect either your or CD's participation in the future. We are all considering possible reasons and responses, as well as enjoying an opportunity to include some witty, but relevant humor in our efforts to get a handle on this issue.

Thank you for your understanding and patience with us. Please feel free to join in.

-Will

Thanks Will. As a risk manager by trade, understand completely a cautious approach. Has been crazy hectic here handling the purchase of the boat and I may have been a bit short-sighted in my approach. No harm no foul and so excited to have found a place of like-minded people! Thanks for replying!

@hceajudah

I was being cautious as I did not see questions or inquiries to the forum first which is the general course. Why? I had identity theft in the past and what a tough job to stop that. Also I have to be very careful now with another matter unrelated to this forum

do you want to start over?

Crazy Dave, most definitely! From my perspective, there was never a bad start! Thanks so much!
